Take our Palm Springs Black History Tour, the only tour of its kind in Greater Palm Springs!
This tour will introduce you to Black pioneers of our city whose talents and perseverance overcame the prejudices of earlier times. Led by experienced local guides, this authentic adventure promises a unique glimpse into the stories and sites often overlooked on the typical tourist circuit.
It begins on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation Section 14 where African-Americans first settled.
You’ll see the works of renowned midcentury modern architect Paul R. Williams. You’ll learn about land developer and city planner Lawrence Crossley who came here in the 1920s.
The tour continues to Desert Highland Gateway Estates — Palm Springs’ largest predominantly black neighborhood — where community activists and athletes of worldwide repute have all lived. You’ll see several Historic Churches.
The tour ends at the James O. Jessie Unity Center, the centerpiece of the Desert Highland Gateway Community, and the social, cultural, and recreational hub of the area.
