Marcus Funchess Named First Black Superintendent

In a historic move, the Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) has named Dr. Marcus Funchess superintendent, marking the first time a Black educator will lead the district since its founding.

Dr. Funchess brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources in the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD). Throughout his tenure, he has been recognized for his commitment to educational excellence and equity, earning accolades such as the Black Culture Foundation's Black Rose Award and the 2020 Distinguished Service Award. He holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, a master’s degree in Cross-Cultural Teaching, and a bachelor’s degree from California State University, San Bernardino.

Dr. Funchess’s appointment is expected to be officially approved during the June 24 PSUSD Board meeting. If confirmed, he will begin his new role on July 1, 2025, following the retirement of current superintendent Dr. Tony Signoret on June 30. His appointment is not only a personal achievement but also a significant milestone for PSUSD, reflecting the district's dedication to diversity and inclusion. Dr. Funchess's leadership is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives and continued progress toward educational equity for all students in the district, regardless of background.

In a statement, Dr. Funchess expressed his excitement and deep sense of purpose in joining PSUSD, saying, “From the moment I thought there was a possibility that I could be the next Superintendent of PSUSD, I was inspired by the opportunity. I am prepared to lead and work alongside students, families, educators, staff, and the broader community to continue building an inclusive and high-achieving school district.”

Urban Palm Springs welcomes Dr. Funchess and looks forward to the positive impact his leadership will have on the district's future.
