Jarvis Crawford Retires After More than 28 Years of Service

By Urban Palm Springs

After more than 28 years of dedicated service to the City of Palm Springs, Jarvis Crawford is retiring from the City's Parks and Recreation Department, where he served as Community Center Manager of the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center.

His retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable career rooted in public service, innovation, youth development, and community engagement. For nearly three decades, Crawford has helped shape the programs, opportunities, and experiences that have made the Unity Center an important part of the Desert Highland community.

But his legacy is about much more than the number of years he served. It is about the generations of residents he has impacted, the programs he created, the resources he helped secure, and the relationships he built along the way.

From College Intern to Community Leader
Crawford's journey with the City of Palm Springs began as a college intern under James Jessie who was Community Center Manager at the time. What started as an opportunity to gain professional experience developed into a lifelong commitment to serving the Palm Springs community.

Through the City's Parks and Recreation Department, he helped develop and deliver programs, activities, and services designed to enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages.

Over the years, Crawford became instrumental in expanding the role of the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, recognizing that a community center should be more than a building. It should be a place where residents can learn, grow, connect, and find opportunities to improve their lives.

Programs That Changed Lives and Connected Generations
Among Crawford's significant accomplishments was establishing the City's first computer class offered at the Unity Center. Recognizing the growing importance of technology and computer literacy, he created an opportunity for community members to develop skills and access new learning experiences.

He also established the Mature Adult Program, a year-round initiative that became the City's only year-round program of its kind. The program provides seniors with meaningful activities, educational opportunities, guest speakers, social engagement, and resources that encourage active and healthy lifestyles.

His commitment to younger generations was equally important. Through the Youth Encouragement Program, Crawford helped create opportunities to support and encourage young people, reinforcing the importance of positive youth development and community involvement.

Throughout his career, he continued developing and expanding programs that addressed the changing needs and interests of residents, creating opportunities for education, recreation, personal growth, and social connection.

Investing in the Future of the Unity Center
Crawford's contributions extended beyond programming. He also took an active role in writing grants and pursuing funding opportunities to improve and expand the Unity Center.

His efforts included funding initiatives supporting the expansion of the gymnasium and the Center building, helping position the facility to better accommodate the needs of current and future generations.

His work reflected an understanding that investing in community facilities is also an investment in the people who depend on them.

Keeping the Community Connected During COVID-19
When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted everyday life and forced restrictions on traditional indoor activities, Crawford found creative ways to keep the Unity Center connected to the community.

Rather than allowing programming to come to a complete stop, he developed alternative recreational opportunities and moved activities outdoors when indoor programming was restricted.

His ability to adapt during an unprecedented time demonstrated the importance of maintaining community connections, especially when residents needed opportunities for engagement and social interaction.

A Legacy That Spans Generations
Perhaps one of Crawford's most meaningful accomplishments has been witnessing the impact of his work across generations.

Over the years, he had the opportunity to work with children and teenagers who participated in Unity Center programs, watch them grow into adults, and eventually welcome their own children into the Center.

That multigenerational connection represents something special. It demonstrates how community programs can create lasting relationships and become part of a family's history.

For some residents, the Unity Center has been a place they experienced as children, returned to as adults, and now share with their own families.

That is a legacy that extends far beyond any job title.

A Legacy Beyond Programs
Reflecting on his career, Crawford identifies his greatest accomplishment not simply as the number of programs created, grants secured, or activities offered, but knowing that his work made a difference in people's lives.

From beginning as a college intern to helping shape programs and services that have impacted generations of families, he has had the privilege of being part of something much bigger than recreation.

He helped build connections, create opportunities, and establish a foundation for community engagement in Palm Springs.

The James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center will continue to serve as an important community resource, but the people who have experienced its programs and relationships will carry forward the impact of Crawford's dedication.

Urban Palm Springs recognizes Jarvis Crawford for more than 28 years of dedicated service to the City of Palm Springs and, most importantly, to the residents and families of the Desert Highland community.

His career is a reminder that public service is about more than fulfilling responsibilities. It is about recognizing community needs, creating opportunities, investing in people, and leaving things better for the generations that follow.

Jarvis, thank you for your unwavering commitment to serving others and the lasting impact you have made.

Your dedication to youth development, seniors, community engagement, and creating opportunities for local families will be greatly missed.

Congratulations on your retirement. We wish you happiness, good health, and fulfillment in this next chapter.

More than 28 years of service. Generations of families impacted. A legacy that will continue.

Thank you, Jarvis Crawford!
