Desert Highland Unity Center Receives Technology Upgrades

By Deiter Crawford

The James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, the heart of Palm Springs’ historic Black neighborhood, has taken a bold step into the future with a major technology upgrade designed to expand digital access and equity for local residents.

Thanks to more than $56,000 in funding from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the center has installed 16 new computer workstations and upgraded its infrastructure to provide building-wide Wi-Fi. For the first time, visitors and community members can access high-speed internet from anywhere in the facility—including the gymnasium and meeting rooms.

This investment marks a significant milestone for the Desert Highland Gateway Estates neighborhood, a historically underserved community that has long faced barriers to reliable internet access and digital resources. With this upgrade, the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center is now better equipped to serve as a vital hub for education, workforce development, community programs, and social connection.

“Technology is a basic need in today’s world,” said Jarvis Crawford, Community Center Manager. “From school assignments and job applications to telehealth and entrepreneurship, reliable internet access and updated equipment are essential. These upgrades ensure that our community isn’t left behind.”

The new computer lab and Wi-Fi access support a range of programming, from digital literacy classes for seniors to youth coding workshops and online career training. Community organizations and nonprofits can also take advantage of the improved facilities to host meetings, workshops, and educational events in a fully connected environment.

Urban Palm Springs applauds the CPUC for recognizing the importance of investing in digital equity and community empowerment. This project is a powerful example of what’s possible when state resources are directed toward historically marginalized neighborhoods with long legacies of resilience and strength.

As Palm Springs continues to evolve into a center of innovation and opportunity, it’s critical that all communities share in the benefits. With these technology enhancements, the Desert Highland Unity Center stands as a shining example of progress, partnership, and community power.
