Dr. Funchess Visits Desert Highland Gateway Neighborhood

Deiter Crawford Urban Palm Springs

On a warm summer afternoon in Palm Springs, community members gathered at Ajalon Baptist Church in the heart of the Historic Desert Highland Gateway Estates neighborhood for a powerful and personal moment of connection. Dr. Marcus Funchess, newly appointed Superintendent of Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD), made his first visit to the neighborhood to introduce himself, share his vision, and listen to the people he now proudly serves.

This visit was historic—not only because Dr. Funchess is the first Black superintendent in PSUSD’s history—but because it demonstrated his commitment to beginning his tenure with community, culture, and connection at the forefront. Hosted by Ajalon Baptist Church, a spiritual and cultural anchor for generations of Black families in Northern Palm Springs, the gathering brought together students, elders, educators, and community leaders in an intimate and inspiring conversation.

Dr. Funchess shared his personal journey, his priorities as an educational leader, and his hopes for building bridges between schools and neighborhoods. “From the moment I considered this opportunity, I felt the responsibility that comes with leading a district as diverse and dynamic as Palm Springs Unified,” he shared. “Being here, face to face, is how trust and understanding begin.”

In attendance were youth from the neighborhood, church members, longtime residents, who all welcomed Dr. Funchess with open arms. The dialogue was authentic and forward-looking, touching on issues of equity in education, student achievement, parent involvement, and the need for culturally affirming curriculum and leadership.

The Desert Highland Gateway Estates neighborhood, home to one of the region’s most historic Black communities, has long been a place of strength, resilience, and civic engagement. Dr. Funchess’s visit was a meaningful acknowledgment of that legacy—and a promise that the voices of the community will be heard in the shaping of the district’s future.

Importantly, Dr. Funchess also shared his intention to continue these conversations in other neighborhoods throughout the district. He plans to meet with more communities in the near future to listen, learn, and foster the partnerships necessary for long-term student success. His approach signals a leadership style grounded in visibility, accountability, and genuine engagement.

As Urban Palm Springs continues its mission to uplift and document Black history, leadership, and culture in the Coachella Valley, we are proud to stand alongside Dr. Funchess as he begins this new chapter. His visit to Ajalon Baptist Church marks the beginning of a new relationship—one rooted in respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence for all students.

We look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership unfold—and to continuing the work of connecting community to classrooms in ways that honor our past and inspire our future.
